No fewer than 13 people killed and 98 injured in train crash in Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's flagship government projects.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” stated the country's president.

The leader announced that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the former leader, whose time in office finished the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's strategic vision for the southern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The building of both train projects was managed by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its role in civilian infrastructure. They were built at an accelerated speed, surpassing predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently fueled persistent questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party demanded an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This stoppage was suggested while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."

In reaction, the head of state asserted that the train had been functioning in full compliance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these strategic projects.
