Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who come off popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a major health publication shows that while overweight people often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Users buying such medications must be informed of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a reversion to starting mass in about 18 months.
Comparing Therapies
The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through dieting generally have a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Experts propose the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Issue?
Health authorities recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts contend that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.
This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
People who have stopped the jabs report a powerful return of hunger.
"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you become starving," said one woman.
The struggle is worsened if users have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Significant Adoption
Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest being substantial.
- Use is more common among women than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts caution that while these medications are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined lifestyle support.
